How does marriage or divorce affect a Will?

How does marriage affect a Will?

Your Will is revoked automatically on the day you are married. This does not apply if the Will is created “in anticipation of marriage”. If the Will makes it clear that you will be married then your Will is still valid. A solicitor should be employed in the drafting of a Will to ensure this is clear and that your Will is valid.

How does divorce affect a Will?

Getting a divorce does not revoke previous Wills, however it does revoke any gift left to your former spouse. It also revokes your former spouses appointment as executor, guardian or trustee in your Will.
